Content Classification for Traffic Optimization

Launched in November 2022, this group has completed its first phase in determining how changes in traffic patterns and new use cases, such as immersive XR, call for new ways to look at how quality of experience maps to network availability. This led the group to establish the requirements for a content classification framework where content providers can convey simple encoding of the content flow types to network providers for network traffic optimization purposes in a non-discriminatory and non-priority centric way. To further this work, the group will begin conducting outreach to ATIS members and non-members including academia for feedback and proposals. The group will also collect and evaluate proposed solutions, track ideas based on the published criteria in the group’s intermediate paper, categorize them to harmonize potentially related solutions, and identify if there is a need for experimentation as a way to make stronger recommendations. Findings from this new phase of work will be culminated into a report that will focus on creating deployable traffic-management solutions to meet the needs of users, network providers, and application providers.
