ATIS Advances 5G’s Augmented and Virtual Reality Capabilities in New White Paper

WASHINGTON — April 6, 2017 —  The increase in applications using augmented and virtual reality will push the future 5G network to address complex and demanding traffic scenarios, and a new ATIS white paper provides insight into how these innovative new services will affect 5G performance targets. 5G Reimagined: A North American Perspective (Issue 2) offers new use cases that address both augmented and virtual reality, advancing ATIS’ initial work on 5G requirements.

Augmented and virtual reality are emerging as important technologies for entertainment and gaming. They also have extensive professional applications, for example, improving the situational awareness of emergency first responders. The use cases in the ATIS report will be important drivers for network requirements addressing improved latency and bandwidth as well as content distribution.

Issue 2 advances the work undertaken in ATIS’ initial 5G Reimagined report, a fundamental industry document setting forth key North American 5G requirements,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller. “The new use cases were chosen based on broad industry consensus supporting the need to address the network impact of the applications growing in popularity with today’s users.”

In addition to the augmented and virtual reality use cases, 5G Reimagined: A North American Perspective (Issue 2) provides additional detail on 5G deployment. It emphasizes mechanisms that will fully leverage the existing LTE network to guarantee a smooth rollout of 5G while ensuring a positive user experience during transition. The new white paper further provides an initial assessment of the network aspects of Optimized User Experience (OUx). Full OUx requirements will be discussed in detail in a separate white paper forthcoming in the second quarter of 2017.
