Tutorial

Monday, June 9, 2014
1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

WSTS 2014 will include a separate tutorial session on the Monday afternoon preceding, the Workshop sessions. The purpose of the tutorial session is multifold. The material that will be covered will introduce synchronization and timing concepts and serve to provide a foundation to allow attendees to better appreciate the material covered in the regular sessions over the three following days. Key areas for discussion will include

  • Fundamentals of synchronization and timing
  • Synchronization implications in circuit-switched (i.e. TDM ─ time division multiplexed) and packet-switched networks (i.e. statistically multiplexed)
  • Synchronization needs in today’s networks (e.g. wireless and non-telecom industries such as utilities and financial applications)
  • Clocks, clock models, and metrics for quantifying clock performance
  • Atomic clocks and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS)
  • Time transfer protocols including PTP (Precision Timing Protocol) and NTP (Network Time Protocol), and packet-based clock metrics
  • Standards Overview

This material will be presented by a panel of the following speakers:

  • Anurag Gupta, Principal Systems Engineer, Aviat Networks
  • Silvana Rodrigues, Director of System Engineering, IDT
  • Stefano Ruffini, R&D Expert, Ericsson
  • Dominik Schneuwly, Senior Engineer, Oscilloquartz
  • Kishan Shenoi, CTO, Qulsar
  • Marc Weiss, Mathematician and GPS Expert, NIST

The tutorial is designed to be interactive and there with a significant amount of time allocated for questions and answers.
