IP Services Interconnect

Operators are migrating existing services to an all-IP implementation, and new services like HD voice are being introduced into all-IP networks. To support these services, operators will need IP interconnection and interoperability. IP network-to-network interface standards have been defined, but their fragmentation means that case-by-case analyses are still required. The ATIS IP Services Interconnect Focus Group is defining a strategy to develop an IP services interconnect specification that covers all service provider types (wireless, wireline, and cable), for both current and future services. This Focus Group should be viewed in the context of the complementary ATIS/SIP Forum IP-NNI Task Force, which will develop a fully specified IP-NNI for voice services, with active support from all North American service providers. The joint task force will address a greater level of detail, fully specifying the “on-the-wire” protocol, but it will be limited to voice services. In contrast, the IP Services Interconnect Focus Group will develop a plan for extending that specification to cover a range of current and future services across all service provider types.
