ATIS committee participants kicked off a busy week with a packed day of activities. Almost 30 committees and sub-committees started off their mornings in committee meetings before breaking for an all-ATIS luncheon.

The afternoon kicked off when more than 500 participants convened for the General Session of ATIS Committees, which included the presentation of the 2005 ATIS Annual Awards, welcoming comments from Susan Miller, ATIS president and CEO, and a charge for “what’s next” from ATIS Chairman Bill Smith. Four board members -- Kathy Walker, chief network officer for Sprint Nextel; Nick Adamo, U.S. Service Provider segment vice president for Cisco; Verizon Senior Vice President for Technology and CTO, Mark Wegleitner; and Chris Rice, executive vice president for network planning and engineering for SBC -- participated in a presentation and panel discussion “The Standards Horizon: Building the Future One Standard at a Time,” sharing their vision and companies’ need for standards for convergence, intelligent networking, home networking and IPTV.

The ATIS Technology Forum General Session opened the official proceedings for TELECOM ’05, drawing a standing-room only crowd of more than 1000. Smith, Wegleitner and Rice were joined on stage by Balan Nair, CTO of Qwest, and moderator Miller for the “CTO panel,” giving insight into the realities, opportunities and challenges of rolling out new services and technologies at the scope and service level demanded by carriers, particularly focusing on how WiMAX, IMS and VoIP feature in their respective corporate strategies. Monday evening the TELECOM ’05 Exhibit Hall opened for a two-hour preview party and the first opportunity for ATIS committee participants to “scan to win” in the Exhibit Hall Free-for-All contest.
