GbE is a balanced high-speed communication standard that is widely used around the world. Until recently, the majority of its applications were in a non-hostile environment. New applications in hostile environments, such as industrial control and smart grid systems, not only require error free communication but also require protection against damage that can be caused by transient events such as indirect lightning strikes and power surges.
The addition of protection components must not allow the performance of the overall design to fall below the requirements outlined in the IEEE802.3 Standard.
This presentation covers the characteristics and capabilities of various components; including TVS diodes, Ethernet transformers, electronic current limiters and gas discharge tubes, with respect to meeting the requirements of standards such as GR1089 and ITU-T as well as those in IEEE802.3.
