Fiber to Antenna Surge Protection

With the rapid increase in demand for mobile data, service providers are now carrying data traffic over fiber all the way to the top of cellular towers. Where antenna systems take optical signals and convert into RF signals for transmission. These systems are powered with 48 V DC supply located at the ground level. The DC supply lines taking power to the top of cell tower are exposed to high energy lightning surges and need to be properly protected for long term safe operation of equipment on the cellular towers. Cell towers being tall objects standing above ground level provide an excellent discharge path for the lightning strokes.


This presentation will discuss the lightning surge environment near the top of the cellular towers. Various Surge protection devices that are available and can handle large surge currents will also be part of the presentation.
