Hearing Aid Compatibility

AISP.4-HAC Working Groups

Note: To access the working group pages you must be a member of the HAC Incubator or a member of a particular working group. If you do not have access to a page and think you should, contact Rebecca Goodman.

WG-1: Simpler HA Testing (CLOSED)
Issue:
Reducing Number of Test Points for Hearing Aids
Outcome Desired: Devise simplification of the worst case situation or develop a test scenario with normal positioning
Leader: Ron Scicluna, Etymotic

WG-2 (CLOSED)
Issue:
Standards process v. Incubator process
Outcome Desired: Resolution of how to move forward quickly within the bounds of the mandate from the FCC. Proprietary solutions process.
Leader:
TBD

WG-3 (CLOSED)
Issue:
IEC-60118-13 and C63.19
Outcome Desired: Alternative testing for hearing aid U2 requirements of IEC-60118-13 and C63.19.
Leader: Tom Victorian, Starkey

WG-4
Issue:
Test Plan
Outcome Desired: Create more detailed test plan, including variables for testing.
Leader: Scott Kelley, Motorola
Vice-Chair: David Dzumba, Nokia

WG-5: Accreditation Process (CLOSED)
Issue:
Accreditation Process
Outcome Desired: Determine accreditation process for test labs and training for individual evaluators.
Leader: Don Heirman, ANSI ASC C63

WG-6: Labeling
Issue:
Labeling
Outcome Desired: Develop a labeling plan that is consistent, concise and clear as well as appropriate for consumers by conferring with consumer organizations.
Leader: Susan Mazrui, AT&T

WG-7: Workplan (CLOSED)
Issue:
Leader:

WG-8: AWF
Issue:
Assessing HA sensitivities to Modulation Factors
Outcome Desired: To determine suitable values of AWF for current and emerging wireless digital telephony modulations, or an alternative speech intelligibility impact assessment method applicable to wireless telephone device assessment, and to pursue standardization of the resultant so it may be routinely employed and coordinated with ANSI standard C63.19 as new digital wireless telephony modulations are deployed.
Leader: Al Wieczorek, Motorola

WG9: 850 MHz and Higher Power Technology Challenges
Issue:
Frequency band pentalites in the C63.19 standard.
Outcome Desired: To determine suitable values for frequency banding and pursue coordination of those values in the C63.19 standard.
Leader: Mel Frerking, Cingular and Jim Scordato, Samsung

WG10: 50% Rule Analysis
Issue:
Assessing Technical Challenges to Meeting the 50% Mandate
Outcome Desired:
To determine the technical plausibility of meeting the FCC's February 18, 2008 deadline for 50% of all handsets offered meeting M3 or higher HAC ratings and develop recomendations based upon technical plausibility for alternative solutions and policies.
Leaders: Harold Salters, T-Mobile and Scott Kelley, Motorola

WG-11 VCAT (Volume Control and Tele-coil)
Issue: The consensus agreement created this WG to study volume control and Tele-coil decoupling from M rating.
Outcome desired: Develop a recommendation
to address concerns from the hearing aid user community related to the adequacy of current wireless handset acoustics. Also develop a recommendation with regard to decoupling of M and T ratings based on the findings from this WGs testing.
Leaders: Linda Kozma-Spytek, Gallaudet University and David Chapman, AT&T

Multi-Mode/Band General Principles
Issue:The wireless service providers, manufacturers and representatives of consumers with hearing loss have agreed, under the auspices of AISP.4-HAC, to generate general principles and explore methodologies for conducting “quick tests” to evaluate whether there are HAC interference issues in wireless devices with new multi-mode/band.

Outcome desired: Develop general principles
and a "quick test" plan to evaluate the need for standards for wireless devices to be reported to the FCC by August 2008.
