syntax
In a language, the relationships among characters or groups of characters, independent of their meanings or the manner of their interpretation and use. 2. The structure of expressions in a language. 3. The rules governing the structure of a language. 4. In a language, the relationship among symbols. Note: In computer languages, as in all artificial languages, syntax is developed, and usually described, before their use begins. In natural languages, syntax is developed, and sometimes never described, after use has begun.
