denial of service (DoS)

1. The prevention of authorized access to resources or the delaying of time-critical operations. [2382-pt.8] 2. The result of any action or series of actions that prevents any part of an information system (IS) from functioning. [INFOSEC-99]   3.  1.The unauthorized withholding of information or resources [CESG]. 4. The prevention of legitimate access. Note: This may result from either accidental or malicious causes [CESG].  5. The prevention of authorized access to resources or the delaying of time-critical operations [7498-2].  6. The unauthorized prevention of authorized access to resources or the delaying of time-critical operations [POSIX.6].  7. A denial of service attack is when an attacker consumes the resources on your computer for things it was not intended to be doing, thus preventing normal use of your network resources for legitimate purposes.
