1. [A] Protected/private alphanumeric string used to authenticate an identity or to authorize access to data. [INFOSEC-99] 2. In data communications, a word, character, or combination thereof, that permits access to otherwise inaccessible data, information, or facilities.   3.   A character string used for authentication [CESG].   4.  Confidential authentication information, usually composed of a string of characters [7498-2].   5.  A private character string that is used to authenticate an identity [TCSEC] [POSIX.6].
