New ATIS Report Addresses the Business and Operational Impacts of Today’s Increasingly Programmable Infrastructure

WASHINGTON — The increasing programmability of network infrastructure creates one of the ICT industry’s most significant transitions. A new ATIS analysis assesses the opportunities this change brings service providers — as well as the work required to fully realize the potential value in these opportunities. Operational Opportunities and Challenges of SDN/NFV Programmable Infrastructure is unique in that it is the first industry resource to view software-defined networking and network function virtualization in terms of their service provider impacts. The report focuses on business and operational requirements and identifies the specific functions and interfaces necessary to enable effective provisioning and management of an end-to-end programmable infrastructure.

“This analysis breaks new ground in understanding what is needed to make programmable infrastructure practical and manageable, as it directly addresses the critical factors that go into delivering real-world services to consumers,” said ATIS President and CEO Susan Miller.”

Specifically, the new report covers OSS/BSS impacts, maintenance, reliability/fault detection, and administration, over the full equipment and service life cycles of an IP-based-infrastructure. It also identifies potential changes in operational procedures and staffing skill sets required to support the coming transition. Additionally, it provides the basis for further ATIS analysis focusing on the details of the interaction between a programmable network infrastructure and the operations systems that manage it.

Operational Opportunities and Challenges of SDN/NFV Programmable Infrastructure is available at no cost in the ATIS Document Center — a leading resource for worldwide technical operations standards for communications technologies produced by ATIS Committees and Forums.
