June 23, 2009, Washington, DC - The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) recently filed comments at the Federal Communications Commission related to the National Broadband Plan. In its comments, ATIS stated that the National Broadband Plan should remain cognizant of, and reflect, the industry’s existing and evolving technical standards and solutions that support current and future broadband infrastructure, networks and devices. To realize widespread broadband adaptation, the Plan should allow technical issues to be addressed in a manner that is consistent with industry’s consensus-based work.
ATIS’ comments highlight the depth and breadth of the organization’s work towards enabling current and future broadband solutions. For example, ATIS’ Network Interface Power and Protection (NIPP) committee is currently focused on the next generation of ITU-T PON standards which will increase the bandwidth of fiber-to-the-home customers to the 10 Gbit/s level while maintaining maximum compatibility to existing optical access systems. Further, ATIS’ Optical Transport and Synchronization Committee (OPTXS) is investigating the impact of new services to existing broadband capabilities, as well as developing new high speed transport technology of 100G and above.
“The National Broadband Plan is an important and laudable initiative,” said Susan Miller, ATIS’ President and CEO. “In order to realize the Plan’s full potential, policymakers should consider those technical standards that make possible current and future widespread broadband deployment.”
