ATIS and TIA’S Joint CALEA Standard Published as an American National Standard

October 2, 2006, Washington, D.C. – The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) have published a revision to their joint standard, “Lawfully Authorized Electronic Surveillance,” ANSI/J-STD-025-B-2006.

The document was originally published as an industry standard, J-STD-025-B, in 2004, and was recently approved as an American National Standard (ANS). It is intended that this ANS will supersede the prior industry standard J-STD-025-B.

The purpose of this standard is to facilitate a telecommunications service provider’s (TSP) compliance with the assistance capability requirements defined in Section 103 of CALEA and to help ensure efficient and industry-wide implementation of the assistance capability requirements. Additional capabilities have been included in ANSI/J-STD-025-B-2006 to assist the law enforcement agency (LEA) in conducting lawfully authorized electronic surveillance on cdma2000 ® broadband packet data services. The standard offers a “safe harbor” under Section 107 of the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA), Public Law 103-414.

ANSI/J-STD-025-B-2006 was created by ATIS’ Wireless Technologies and Systems Committee, ATIS’ Packet Technologies and Systems Committee and TIA TR-45. To obtain copies of the document, visit the ATIS Document Center at www.atis.org/docstore.
