Standards Consensus is Goal of ATIS Network Security Symposium

Two-day Symposium and Workshop to Focus on Messaging Models, Network Boundaries

August 26, 2004, Washington, D.C. – Network security experts from industry, global standards development organizations (SDOs) and government will gather in Washington September 21-22 to identify solutions to some of today’s most pressing telecommunications security concerns.

The ATIS Network Security Symposium and Workshop will focus on two roundtable sessions. An industry roundtable addressing security exposures in messaging models will identify the security exposures of messaging programs including email, instant messaging (IM), short messaging service (SMS) and chat programs. A second roundtable will explore the solutions to the security issues that arise when application protocols cross the boundaries between networks owned or managed by different organizations. The sessions are designed to bring participants to consensus for pursuing identified solutions through appropriate standards bodies and getting them into production networks.

In addition, presentations and a short discussion session on Authentication and Confidentiality will take place.

Tuesday morning, a keynote address will be delivered by David Barron, vice chairman of the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC) Industry Executive Subcommittee. Barron also is an assistant vice president with BellSouth.

A more detailed agenda and registration information can be found at www.atis.org.

ATIS is sponsoring the event as part of the implementation phase of its Security Issues Work Plan. Finalized in June 2004 by ATIS’ Technology and Operations (TOPS) Council, the work plan identifies the industry’s most critical priorities and coordinates necessary technical and operational requirements and standards that support interoperability and reliability of equipment and systems. The TOPS Council is comprised of chief technology officers and other senior executives from the communications industry’s leading companies and its standards work plans guide the advancement of suites of necessary standards that result in interoperable, implementable, end-to-end solution for priority issues. Adherence to these standards will provide cost-effective development roadmaps to service providers deploying carrier-grade IP-based communications services.
