ATIS Shares Vision for Network Security Standards at Global Meeting of Standards Development Organizations

May 19, 2004, Washington, D.C.-- A delegation of ATIS member companies – to include AT&T, Cisco, Ericsson, Lucent Technologies and T-Mobile – provided a preview of priority standardization activities underway at ATIS for Network Security, as well as ongoing ATIS standards activities involving NGN Quality of Service (QoS), Emergency Telecommunications Services, and IP over Wireless at the Ninth Global Standards Collaboration meeting (GSC-9) recently held in Seoul, Korea.

The meeting brought together officials and communications technology experts from leading standards organizations around the world, where the status of global standardization efforts on high interest areas was discussed – to include support for Next Generation Network technologies for wireless and wireline networks.

“The rollout of IP voice and data networks and other Next Generation technologies and services is being hindered by a lack of standards in a number of areas, but network security is among the chief challenges,” said Susan Miller, ATIS President and CEO and Head of Delegation to GSC-9. “There is a need for standards and guidelines supporting overall security management, as well as standards that support the security of firewalls, and interoperability between different messaging systems. These and other concerns are the reasons behind ATIS’ recent completion of a prioritized work plan that will ultimately produce the network security standards we need in this industry. We will be working closely with other appropriate standards bodies to begin work on the plan.”

The Network Security Work Plan is one of several standardization work programs ATIS is launching next month – the end result of efforts led by ATIS’ Technology and Operations (TOPS) Council to identify the industry’s most pressing technical priorities, and then coordinate and execute needed standardization work. The Council is chaired by Bill Smith, CTO of BellSouth and ATIS Board Chairman.
