BellSouth CTO Bill Smith Elected ATIS Board Chairman; Verizon Network Service President Paul Lacouture Elected Treasurer
May 11, 2004, Washington, D.C.-- ATIS, the leader in communications and information technology standards development, announced today the election of Bill Smith, Chief Technology Officer for BellSouth Corporation, to Chairman of the ATIS Board of Directors, and the election of Paul Lacouture, President - Network Services Group for Verizon, to the position of ATIS Treasurer.
“ATIS is proud to announce the election of Bill Smith to ATIS Board Chairman, and Paul Lacouture to Treasurer,” said ATIS President & CEO Susan M. Miller. “The tremendous vision, energy and leadership that both Bill and Paul have will bring enormous benefits, as ATIS moves forward with its goal of interoperable, implementable, end-to-end solutions and standards for the industry’s most pressing technical and operational priorities.”
The election of Bill Smith to Chairman and Paul Lacouture to Treasurer occurs as ATIS prepares to launch work plans that produce needed industry standards for Data Interchange, VoIP, and Network Security. The work plans were recently completed by the ATIS Technology and Operations (TOPS) Council, an ATIS Board committee led by Bill Smith that identifies the industry’s leading priorities, and coordinates and executes needed standards work.
The establishment of the ATIS TOPS Council is one of several strategic activities undertaken by the ATIS Board. Other efforts include a membership initiative that has increased the number of ATIS member companies by 75 percent over eight months, and significantly expanded participation in ATIS activities among the industry’s most senior executives. Leading industry officers joining the ranks of the ATIS Board in recent months include Telcordia CEO Matt Desch, Level 3 CTO Jack Waters, Fujitsu COO George Chase, BT Group Technology Officer Mick Reeve, Nortel Networks CTO Greg Mumford, Lucent CTO Bill O’Shea, Acterna Telecom Division President Helmut Berg, and ADC Wireline Business Unit President Mike Pratt, among others.
