ATIS, the leader in communications and information technology standards development, announced today that it has officially become an Organizational Partner of The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Established in 1998, the 3GPP is a global cooperation between six Organizational Partners (ATIS, ARIB, CCSA, ETSI, TTA and TTC) who are recognized as the world’s major standardization bodies representing North America, Japan, China, Europe, and Korea. Organizational Partners determine the general policy and strategy of the 3GPP.

Miller, president and CEO of ATIS, and official ATIS 3GPP Delegation representative signed the 3GPP Organizational Partner Agreement on April 15, 2004, during the two-day 3GPP meeting in Nice, France. “ATIS is proud to join other leading standards bodies as an Organizational Partner of the 3GPP,” said Miller. “The 3GPP plays a vital role in the development of standards for the operations of mobile communications globally, and we look forward to working collaboratively with all the 3GPP partners in support of this effort.”

Other ATIS 3GPP Delegation representatives attending the Nice, France 3GPP meeting included Asok Chatterjee, Ericsson, 1 st Vice Chair of the ATIS Board of Directors and Head of Delegation; Mark Younge, T-Mobile, ATIS’ Committee T1P1 Chair; Don Zelmer, Cingular Wireless, ATIS’ Committee T1P1 Vice Chair; and Sonia Garapaty, Nortel Networks, ATIS’ Committee T1P1.3 Chair.

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) was established for the preparation and maintenance of a complete set of globally applicable technical specifications for a Third Generation mobile system based on the evolved GSM core networks and the radio access technologies supported by 3GPP partners. 3GPP membership consists of 3 categories – Organizational Partners, Market Representation Partners and Individual Members. 3GPP web site: http://www.3gpp.org
