ATIS Lays Groundwork for Completion
of Priority Standards Work Plans in 1Q ‘04
Strategic
Initiatives Undertaken by ATIS Board of Directors Results in Sharp
Growth in Membership and Realignment of ATIS Committees
February 23,
2004, Washington, D.C. – ATIS
announced today that it expects to complete work plans in the
first quarter of 2004 for standards development activities addressing
the industry’s most urgent technical and operational priorities,
to include VoIP, Network Security, and Data Interchange, among
others.
ATIS president and CEO Susan M. Miller illustrated the significance
of the development and completion of the work plans, the result
of efforts undertaken by the ATIS Board’s Technical Operations
(TOPS) Council. “The objective of the TOPS Council is
to assess the industry’s most critical technical and operational
priorities, and coordinate standards work industry-wide in order
to produce a suite of industry standards for the priorities
that, when implemented, provides an interoperable, implementable,
end-to-end solution. Through the work of the TOPS Council, the
industry can expect to gain efficiencies in its standards development
activities, improve the release of new products and services
to market, and ensure a continued focus on the industry’s
most pressing technical and operations work.”
The anticipated completion of the priority work plans are the
end result of a series of significant strategic initiatives
taken by the ATIS Board of Directors, under the leadership of
ATIS Board Chairman Ross K. Ireland, Senior Executive Vice President
- Services, SBC Communications.
In addition to last year’s creation of the ATIS TOPS
Council, ATIS launched a membership initiative that has significantly
expanded its membership as well as the number of leading industry
officers on its board of directors. Within the last nine months
ATIS membership has increased more than 50 percent. Leading
industry officers joining the ranks of the ATIS Board in recent
months are Telcordia CEO Matt Desch, Level 3 CTO Jack Waters,
Fujitsu COO George Chase, BT group technology officer Mick Reeve,
Nortel Networks CTO Greg Mumford, and Lucent CTO Bill O’Shea,
among others.
Other strategic actions undertaken in recent months include
the realignment of ATIS standards committees under a new structure
that more ably supports the requirements of TOPS Council work
plans. The new structure is expected to enhance communication
and interaction among ATIS committees and allows the committees
to conduct their standards activities under common operating
procedures.
“ATIS has aggressively positioned itself to address our
most critical industry priorities,” said Miller. “Through
ATIS, the industry is implementing its strategic vision for
standards and it is being driven by the industry’s most
senior level executives. We have aligned our committees and
our organization’s resources in support of this vision.
2004 will be a year of implementation for ATIS as we execute
on the industry’s technical and operational priorities.”
