ATIS' Miller Joins Telecom and Public Safety Leaders in E911 "Call to Action"

June 12, 2003, Washington, D.C. - Today, ATIS President and CEO Susan M. Miller, participated in the National Emergency Number Association's (NENA) Enhanced 911(E911) "Call to Action" Press Conference, and issued the following statement:

"On behalf of ATIS' member companies, I am very pleased to join other industry and public service representatives for this E9-1-1 Call to Action. The ATIS Board, representing the senior-most executives from our industry, has identified wireless E 9-1-1 as one of the industry's most pressing priorities - an industry priority that demands careful, coordinated collaboration among numerous industry players and public safety organizations.

It is for this reason that ATIS and NENA launched the Emergency Services Interconnection Forum (ESIF) in May of 2002. The ESIF brings together the key stakeholders from the communications industry and public safety community to resolve technical and operational issues surrounding E9-1-1 implementation. To date, the ESIF has identified more than 20 such issues, and serves as a source of technical input to the Federal Communications Commission.

A key output of the ESIF is the 'Wireless E9-1-1 Phase II Readiness Package.' Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) locations must have the right equipment and mapping systems on board in order for PSAPs to successfully deploy Phase II E9-1-1. The Readiness Package is just one example where the communications industry, the public safety community, and the FCC have worked collaboratively through the ESIF, to resolve technical and operational concerns, in support of E9-1-1 implementation.

ATIS will continue to resolve other important E9-1-1 issues, including 911 call handling, location reliability, standard text messaging to PSAP locations, and uniform location testing guidelines. The latter is critical, as there is a need for a documented methodology, to test and validate the performance of FCC mandated E9-1-1 Phase II location systems and technologies.

Wireless E 9-1-1 is a critical priority for the communications industry, our nation's security, and the safety and well-being of every U.S. citizen. ATIS will continue to address the technical and operational challenges presented by E9-1-1 and will continue to work closely with the public service community to respond to these challenges."
