ATIS' Industry
Numbering Committee (INC) "VoIP Workshop" Conducts Inaugural Meeting,
Announces Technical Priorities
January 15, 2003, Washington, D.C. - ATIS' Industry Numbering
Committee (INC) "Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) Workshop"
convened its inaugural meeting on January 9, established its mission
and scope, and identified the technical priorities it will investigate
to determine the possible impact of VoIP on numbering resources
within the North American Numbering Plan (NANP).
ATIS' VoIP Workshop will address the potential numbering issues
arising from the integration of the Public Switched Telephone
Network (PSTN) and Internet Protocol (IP) networks with respect
to VoIP telephone calls; the impacts these different architectural
combinations may have on the use, allocation, and assignment of
NANP numbers; and the impact of applicable regulatory directives.
The technical priorities the VoIP Workshop will address include
various telephone dialing scenarios (i.e., VoIP calls from PSTN
to IP networks, VoIP calls from IP networks to PSTN, and VoIP
calls from IP to IP networks); and VoIP issues associated with:
INC Numbering Assignment Guidelines, Quantity and Distribution
of Numbers, Number Portability and Number Pooling, Geographic
and Non-geographic Numbering Plan Area (NPA), and E911 Service.
ATIS' INC addresses and resolves industry-wide issues associated
with the planning, administration, allocation, assignment and
use of resources and related dialing considerations for public
telecommunications within the North American Number Plan (NANP)
area. For more information on the VoIP Workshop, contact ATIS
Industry Forum Director, Jean-Paul Emard at jpemard@atis.org,
