ATIS Welcomes Level
3 Communications as Member Company – Level 3 Chief Technology
Officer Jack Waters Joins ATIS Board of Directors
January 8, 2004, Washington,
D.C. – ATIS – the leader in communications
and information technology standards development – is pleased
to announce that Level 3 Communications has joined ATIS as a member
company.
Jack Waters, Level 3’s executive vice president and chief
technology officer, has been named to the ATIS board of directors.
Waters will also sit on the ATIS Technical and Operations (TOPS)
Council, which is addressing as a priority voice-over-IP planning
and development.
Waters has over 16 years of experience in the engineering and
design of Internet-based services. At Level 3, he is responsible
for the architecture and deployment of the company’s network
and voice technologies. Prior to joining Level 3, Waters held
executive positions in the Internet services divisions of both
Concert and MCI.
“We’re very pleased to have Level 3 join ATIS, and
we look forward to Jack’s active involvement on our board,”
said Susan M. Miller, president and CEO of ATIS. “Jack’s
expertise in both communications and information services and
his many years of business experience will be of tremendous value
as we move forward with our priority standards initiatives.”
“I look forward to representing Level 3 as a member of
this esteemed organization of industry leaders,” Waters
said. “As telecom providers accelerate the development and
rollout of IP-based services, particularly voice over IP, collaboration
and communication among decision makers and specialists within
the industry will be increasingly critical. The TOPS Council provides
a valuable forum, including the opportunity to develop common
industry-based standards, elevating the level of quality and reliability
of services offered to the marketplace.”
Established in 2002 by the ATIS Board of Directors, the TOPS
Council assesses strategic technical and operational issues within
the industry. Bill Smith, chief technology officer for BellSouth,
serves as the council’s chairman. The TOPS Council is currently
focusing on five areas it has identified as critically important:
voice over IP, mobile wireless services, wide area Ethernet, network
security, and data interchange.
