ATIS' Industry Numbering Committee (INC) Launches "VoIP Workshop" To Address Telephone Number Assignments Within VoIP Networks

January 6, 2003, Washington, D.C. - The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions' (ATIS) Industry Numbering Committee (INC) announced the creation of a new workshop to study the management and optimization of telephone number assignments arising from the increased use of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Through its "Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Workshop," ATIS' INC will identify issues involving numbering resources in VoIP environments to determine their impact on the administration of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP).

"Due to multiple architectural configurations for VoIP, the current numbering paradigm may change in a VoIP environment," said Susan M. Miller, president and CEO of ATIS. "The ATIS VoIP Workshop is designed to address the challenges resulting from the convergence of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and IP networks."

It is anticipated that the first product of the VoIP Workshop will be a white paper report that will identify the various scenarios in which VoIP is being introduced into the marketplace using different technologies, and its potential impact on number assignment and administration.

Norman Epstein, Distinguished MTS - Technology, Verizon Communications, and William Shaughnessy, Manager - Regulatory and External Affairs, BellSouth Telecommunications will co-chair the VoIP Workshop. The first meeting of the VoIP Workshop will be held on January 9, 2003, in Washington, D.C. For more information on the VoIP workshop, contact ATIS Forum Director Jean-Paul Emard at jpemard@atis.org.

ATIS' INC addresses and resolves industry-wide issues associated with the planning, administration, allocation, assignment and use of resources and related dialing considerations for public telecommunications within the North American Number Plan (NANP) area.
