Howard Schmidt, Vice Chair of President Bush's CIP Board, To Address Telecom Network Security at ATIS Summit

Key network standards experts to analyze, identify needed technical work

December 17, 2002, Washington, D.C. - The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) is pleased to announce that Howard A. Schmidt, Vice Chair of the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Board, and Brent Greene, Deputy Manager, National Communications System (NCS) will be among the participants at the "Security of Service Provider Infrastructure in the Era of Convergence," Summit to be held February 4-5, 2003 in Washington, D.C.

"ATIS is proud to host the Security Summit as it will converge industry experts, U.S. Government officials and representatives from Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) who will determine the technical and operational standards necessary to protect U.S.-based communications networks," said Susan M. Miller, president and CEO of ATIS.

Schmidt will highlight the panel discussion entitled, "Government and Service Provider Perspectives on Security." He will be joined by Brent Greene and William Ruhl, CEO of D&E Communications, Inc., and member of the National Security Telecommunication Advisory Committee (NSTAC).

Technology executives from some of the largest wireline and wireless carriers will identify how interoperable and scalable security solutions can be provided and maintained within multi-service provider networks. These participants will include Bill Smith, President - Interconnection Services & Chief Technology Officer, BellSouth Telecommunications; Dr. Arthur Deacon, Vice President - Network Operations, Service Assurance and Chief Compliance Officer, AT&T Corporation; and Bruce Johnson, Senior Vice President - Operations & Engineering, VeriSign Telecommunications Services.

Summit technical sessions will convene to examine how Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) can continue to develop technical solutions for end-users, enterprises, service providers, manufacturers and network operators to utilize in addressing specific security threats. SDOs participating in the program will include ATIS' Standards Committee T1; Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF); IPv6 Forum; ATM Forum; Multiservice Switching Forum; and the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA).
