ATIS Sponsors "Public Safety Wireless and Homeland Security" Education Program

October 10, 2002, Washington, D.C. - During the upcoming "National Wireless Engineering Conference," ATIS will sponsor a full-day technology forum entitled, "Public Safety Wireless and Homeland Security." This education program is scheduled for Monday, November 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and will cover the key security issues facing wireless networks, including security issues surrounding specific air interfaces as well as redundancy systems.

Susan Miller, President and CEO of ATIS, will serve as the chairperson for the technology forum. Presenters will include Ed Hall, ATIS' Vice President for Technology Development; Ron Ryan, Senior Manager, Nortel Networks, and Chair, ATIS' Standards Committee T1 Surveillance Ad Hoc; Mark L. Younge, Vice Chairman, ATIS' Standards Committee T1 Subcommittee T1P1; Mark Drennan, Director, Technical Operations, Intrado; Jim Nixon, Director, Government Affairs, T-Mobile; and Don Zelmer, Principal Member of Technical Staff, Cingular Wireless.

In addition, experts on the Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) will offer a summary of the most recent regulatory and judicial actions and what they mean for manufacturers and services providers who must track changing CALEA requirements. Presenters on the work of the FCC Network Reliability and Interoperability Council (NRIC) VI Focus Group on Public Safety will provide an overview of wireless network security activities and key issues. Finally, the significant security issues surrounding special mobile radio (SMR) interconnection and interoperability will be addressed, including technical challenges facing the implementation of wireless E911 and interconnecting Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs).
