Telecom Standards Activities Supporting Network Security Now Underway within ATIS

October 2, 2002, Washington, D.C. - The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) - the leader in communications standards development - announced today that its Committee T1 Technical Subcommittee T1M1 (Internetwork Operations, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning, OAM&P) has begun standards development work to improve security within the telecommunications network.

T1M1 in collaboration with the Security Requirements Working Group (SRWG) - composed of experts from the President's National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC) Network Security Information Exchange (NSIE) and the Government NSIE - has agreed to examine security requirements for management of the public telecommunications network, including the emerging next generation network. Based on a contribution from the SRWG, T1M1 will develop a proposed American National Standard (ANS) on "Security Requirements for the Management Plane" at its upcoming meeting in San Diego, November 4-7, 2002.

The proposed ANS will allow telecommunications Network Element (NE) suppliers, Operations Support System (OSS) suppliers, government and private sector network operators and service providers to implement a secure telecommunications network management infrastructure.

According to T1M1 Chair Mike Fargano of Qwest, "A security breach of a NE or OSS at the Management Plane could include a major incursion into the network by an intruder, leading to loss of integrity and service of the elements and a major network outage or disruption. T1M1 management experts are very pleased to work the critical and timely issues involving Management Plane Security in collaboration with recognized security experts from the SRWG."
