Faster Delivery of Broadband Services to Customers is Goal of ATIS' OBF "DSL Standardization Workshop"
ISPs, ILECs, CLECs, DLECs Define Expectations and Deliverables
September 18, 2002, Washington, D.C. - Companies operating in the DSL arena that participated in ATIS' Ordering and Billing Forum (OBF) inaugural "DSL Standardization Workshop" concluded that standardizing the burdensome DSL ordering process is the desired path to delivering broadband services faster to customers. The Workshop represented the first time ISPs collaborated with leading ILECs, CLECs and DLECs to discuss developing ordering standards that will facilitate the DSL ordering process.
"There is a real opportunity for standards to bring efficiencies and create uniform processes necessary for ordering and delivering broadband services," said Susan M. Miller, president and CEO of ATIS. "The OBF DSL Standardization Workshop is the appropriate venue for the industry to collaborate on the development of platforms and protocols which will streamline business processes and significantly reduce costs in the DSL environment."
Representatives from the leading ISPs including AOL, DIRECTV Broadband, MegaPath, and MSN identified the need for streamlining the varied ordering methods necessary for delivering DSL services to their customers. Currently, if an ISP desires to launch DSL services, the ordering process requires interfacing with a minimum of nine different ordering systems for a national rollout. Industry members of the Workshop plan to develop the appropriate ordering standard interface that will quickly transmit data between ISPs, ILECs, CLECs, and DLECs when an order is placed for DSL service.
The inaugural OBF DSL Standardization Workshop was held from August 20-21, 2002, during the OBF 79 Meeting in Scottsdale, AZ. The next DSL Standardization Workshop is scheduled during the OBF 80 Meeting on November 18-19 in West Montreal, Canada. For more information on the DSL Workshop, contact OBF Director, John Pautlitz at jpautlitz@atis.org.
