ATIS and Committee T1 To Issue Report on "Signaling for VoIP Summit" Findings

Report To Identify Key Challenges Facing VoIP Implementation

August 28, 2002, Washington, D.C. - As interest in the revenue potential of new services supported by Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) continues to grow, technical challenges continue to hamper the promise of affordable solutions that successfully meet carrier requirements. As a result, ATIS and its Standards Committee T1 recently convened the "Signaling for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)" Summit and are preparing a report based on the summit findings.

The summit's objective was to identify key issues and requirements for signaling systems and protocols supporting service differentiation, Quality of Service (QoS) control, and other functions essential to VoIP deployment. The report will identify areas where standardization efforts are most needed to support VoIP implementation, and it will recommend next steps to harmonize VoIP standardization efforts.

The summit gathered more than 145 communications and technology experts, including representatives from more than 12 Standards Development Organizations (SDOs). Day one of the summit was led by the following senior executives from U.S. carriers: Bill Smith, Chief Product Development & Technology Officer, BellSouth; Eva Low, Vice President for New Technology Introduction, SBC Communications; Dr. Eberhard Wunderlich, Labs Development Vice President for AT&T; and Dennis Francis, Vice President for Development, Nextel.

The executives provided presentations identifying the service provider requirements on VoIP implementation, to include cost benefits and the potential for new and improved customer services, as well as applications challenges, and other practical business considerations. The presentations are available on the ATIS web site at www.atis.org.

ATIS and its Committee T1 plan to issue the Signaling for VoIP Report in the next few weeks. An e-mail subscriber list has been established to provide information to facilitate future communications among SDOs for purposes of progressing work on issues identified with the summit. Interested parties may subscribe to the list at www.atis.org.
