"Signaling for VoIP" Summit to Feature Service Provider Vision Leading to Deployment of Quality VoIP

July 31, 2002, Washington, D.C. - Dennis Francis, Vice President of Technology Development for Nextel Communications and Eberhard Wunderlich, Director of Connectivity and Network Services for AT&T Corporation, will be among the participants at the "Signaling for Voice over Internet Protocol (SVoIP)" Summit to be held August 13-14, 2002. ATIS and its sponsored Standards Committee T1 are organizing the Summit.

Francis and Wunderlich will join William L. Smith, BellSouth CTO, for a panel discussion entitled, "Service Provider Vision," on Day One of the Summit. The panel will illuminate the expectations and requirements of wireline and wireless carriers for the deployment of IP-based voice services.

Upon completion of the "Service Provider Vision" session, technical sessions will convene to feature work underway in twelve SDOs and Forums, including the ITU-T, IETF, Committee T1, and TIA. The output from the Summit will be publication of a Committee T1 Technical Report containing a "gap analysis" of SVoIP standardization.

The two-day "Signaling for VoIP" Summit will convene key domestic and international Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) and Forums interested in coordinating communications standards and other requirements relating to VoIP. The Summit agenda and registration are available at www.atis.org. The Summit will be held at Intelsat offices in Washington, D.C.

In addition to Committee T1, participating organizations to date include the ATM Forum; the Internet Engineering Task Force; ETSI TIPHON™; the International Telecommunications Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector Study Groups 11, 12, 13 and 16; the International Softswitch Consortium; the Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Forum; the Multiservice Switching Forum; the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP); the Telecommunications Industry Association Engineering Committees TR 30, 34, 41, and 45; the IPDR Organization, and the ENUM Forum.
