ATIS-sponsored Committee T1 Expands Mission Beyond Telecommunications Standards

New Focus Includes Information Services, Applications

July 24, 2002, Washington, D.C. - ATIS' Standards Committee T1 - the key developer of communications network interconnection and interoperability standards - today announced it approved a new mission and scope statement. The expanded mission and scope is a result of Committee T1's recognition of the impact of converging technologies, and the need to bring together different technology experts to identify interconnectivity and interoperability issues and develop the communications standards necessary to resolve them.

Committee T1's mission and scope now includes the development of standards for all forms of communications network technology and associated signaling, services, and essential supporting functions such as survivability, performance, and operations administration, maintenance and provisioning (OAM&P).

Ray Hapeman, Committee T1 Chair, explained, "With its new mission and scope, Committee T1 and its six Technical Subcommittees (TSCs) will develop communications standards and implementation agreements related to interfaces as they apply to various applications to interconnect and interoperate communications networks at interfaces with end-users and carriers and with information, Internet, and enhanced service providers. In addition, Committee T1 will convene technical programs that encapsulate key issues facing the communications industry, including the upcoming "Signaling for VoIP" Summit, hosted by Committee T1 and ATIS, August 13-14 in Washington, DC."

"The environment for telecommunications standardization has changed significantly over the past two years," said Susan Miller, president and CEO of ATIS. "Committee T1 proactively recognized the need to remain responsive to the communications and information industry it serves and expanded its mission and scope to meet the current needs of this dynamic industry. Committee T1 has been sponsored by ATIS since 1984."

The new mission and scope statement entered the 30-day public review required by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for changes made to the Bylaws or Procedures of accredited standards development organizations on Friday, July 19, 2002.

Committee T1 provides technical input to the United States Department of State supporting U.S. participation in international standards bodies. More than 1,200 telecommunications engineers and technologists bring their expertise to Committee T1's six technical subcommittees. Committee T1 is a founding member of the Global Standards Collaboration (GSC) group of regional standards development organizations and works closely with the FCC on network reliability issues. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredits committee T1. More information is available by visiting the Committee T1 Web site at www.t1.org.
