July 12, 2002, Washington, D.C. - The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), the Administrating Organization for the celebration of U.S. World Standards Day 2002, is pleased to announce that William M. Daley, president of SBC Communications, will serve as the honorary chairman and the recipient of the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award.

Daley's participation in World Standards Day symbolizes this year's theme, "Standards Mean Business," and recognizes SBC's commitment to openness and due process in standards development for the telecommunications industry in the United States and worldwide. As president of SBC Communications, Daley is responsible for the strategic planning, regulatory matters, governmental initiatives, external affairs and international affairs corporate-wide. Daley served as Secretary of Commerce under President Clinton from January 1997 to June 2000.

"William Daley is a recognized leader in the areas of business, technology and standards. His commitment to incorporating technology standards in the business practices for SBC Communications will help promote the role of national and international standards in eliminating global barriers to trade and enhancing U.S. competitiveness," said Susan Miller, president and CEO of ATIS. "The U.S. World Standards Day Planning Committee, and ATIS as the Administrating Organization, are honored to have William Daley serve as the honorary chairman."

The U.S. standards and conformity assessment community will celebrate World Standards Day with a special exhibition, reception and dinner on Wednesday, October 16 at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Washington, D.C. headquarters. This event is co-hosted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
