ATIS-sponsored Committee T1 Announces "Signaling for VoIP" Summit

June 12, 2002, Washington, D.C. - ATIS' Standards Committee T1 - the key developer of communications network interconnection and interoperability standards - today announced its plans to host a "Signaling for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)" Summit, August 13-14, 2002, in Washington, D.C. The Summit will convene key Standards Development Organizations (SDOs), forums and international organizations interested in coordinating communications standards relating to VoIP. VoIP addresses the transmission of voice conversations over a data network using the Internet Protocol.

"The goal of the Signaling for VoIP Summit is to facilitate the industry's desire to assure that a coordinated set of standards that support VoIP signaling in terms of architecture, service requirements, interfaces, gateway functions, interconnection requirements, security requirements, end-to-end performance requirements, billing requirements, and protocol interworking is achieved," said Ray Hapeman, Committee T1 Chairman.

"The ATIS/Committee T1 VoIP Summit will provide the appropriate venue to identify and harmonize the standards being developed by numerous SDOs and forums worldwide," said Susan Miller, president and CEO of ATIS. "It is critical that wireline and wireless service providers and manufacturers coordinate their efforts to create universal standards that will lead to a viable, end-to-end solution for VoIP."

ATIS and Committee T1 will serve as the Summit organizers. Participating organizations to date include Committee T1; the ATM Forum; the Internet Engineering Task Force; ETSI TIPHON; the International Telecommunications Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector Study Groups 9, 11,13 and 16; the International Softswitch Consortium; the Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Forum; the Multiservice Switching Forum; the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP); the Telecommunications Industry Association Engineering Committees TR 30, 34, 41, and 45; and the Telecommunications Standardization Advisory Council of Canada.

ATIS and Committee T1 plan to announce the formal VoIP Summit schedule in the next several weeks following coordination with the participating groups. The Summit will be held at the Intelsat offices in Washington, D.C. To register for the Summit, please contact James A. Crandall, ATIS/T1 Director at jcrandall@atis.org.
