ATIS Receives American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accreditation as Standards Development Organization
February 21, 2002, Washington, D.C. - The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), the leading telecommunications standards organization for the United States and North America, announced that it has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an official accredited Standards Development Organization (SDO).
"ATIS has experienced tremendous growth in recent years and currently sponsors 17 standards committees and forums, as well as its ATIS Incubator Solutions Program. It was the right time to seek ANSI accreditation, which will allow all ATIS committees, forums, and other standards development groups within ATIS to create American National Standards if they so choose," said Susan Miller, president and CEO of ATIS. "Furthermore, accreditation provides the incentive for other independent fora to join ATIS and reap the benefits of ANSI accreditation without having to complete the accreditation process independently."
The accreditation verifies that ATIS has met the ANSI criteria to become accredited under the Organization Method of developing consensus. ATIS has a long-standing relationship with ANSI and abides by the principles espoused in ANSI. These principles are designed to ensure the integrity and efficiency of the standards formulation process and include due process, open membership, balanced industry participation, and consensus of all interested parties.
Within the last two years ATIS has increased its number of standards committees by five, adding to its sponsorship the International Forum for ANSI-41 Standards Technology (IFAST); the IMSI Oversight Council (IOC); the Interactive Voice Response Forum (IVR); the TTY Forum; and the jointly sponsored Administrative Council for Terminal Attachments (ACTA). ATIS' sponsored committees include Standards Committee T1, which was sponsored by ATIS upon its establishment and also accredited by ANSI in 1984. Committee T1 develops technical standards and reports regarding interconnection and interoperability of telecommunications networks at interfaces with end-user systems, carriers, information and enhanced-service providers, and customer premises equipment (CPE).
Also previously accredited by ANSI and a sponsored committee of ATIS is Committee O5, which develops standards for use by the telecommunications industry in areas dealing with wood poles and other wood products.
ANSI is the private, non-profit organization that administers and coordinates the United States voluntary standardization and conformity assessment system.
