Wireless Wideband InterNet Access (WWINA) Standards Work Underway in Standards Committee T1
November 16, 2001, Washington, D.C. --- Leading telecom standards developer Standards Committee T1 - sponsored by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) - announced today plans to create standards supporting Wireless Wideband InterNet Access (WWINA) network systems, which provide high speed Internet access and portability on wireless devices in a low mobility environment.
WWINA is optimized for use by wireless subscribers who utilize Internet applications such as web surfing or file transfer program (ftp) access on personal computers and PDAs. It is viewed as an alternative solution to Next Generation wireless systems that are voice-centric and highly optimized for mobility at vehicular speeds, and include soft hand-off capability. WWINA capabilities could be deployed by service providers to effectively complement their existing and future wireless service offerings.
To support the WWINA standards activity, Committee T1's Technical Subcommittee T1P1 for Wireless/Mobile Services and Systems has established a new Working Group, T1P1.4. The Working Group's next meeting will be held via conference call on December 6. Information on participation in the next meeting is available on the Committee T1 web site at www.t1.org, or by calling ATIS, the sponsoring body of Standards Committee T1, at 202/393-5453.
The processes used by Committee T1 to develop WWINA standards will be driven by technology independent requirements, and any proven technology that meets those requirements will be considered in the standardization process. At this time, one technology being considered is I-CDMA developed by Tantivy Communications, Inc., located in Melbourne, Florida.
Dr. Mel Woinsky, a recipient of the ANSI Finegan Standards Medal for his earlier leadership in development and application of wireless standards, has been appointed as the temporary chairman of the new WWINA Working Group.
"I am very pleased to have the opportunity to lead this important effort that will drive such innovative technology, commented Dr. Woinsky." "This standardization effort will help foster the deployment and availability of WWINA, and the benefits it offers to both service providers and their customers."
About Standards Committee T1
Standards Committee T1 develops American National Standards, technical reports and technical requirements for telecommunications services, network interconnection, interoperability, and performance. Committee T1 provides technical input to the United States Department of State supporting U.S. participation in international standards bodies. More than 1,000 telecommunications engineers and technologists bring their expertise to Committee T1's six technical subcommittees. Committee T1 is a founding member of the Global Standards Collaboration (GSC) group of regional standards development organizations and works closely with the FCC on network reliability issues. Committee T1 is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). More information is available by visiting the Committee T1 Web site at www.t1.org. Committee T1 documents are available at the ATIS Document Center, located at www.atis.org.
About ATIS
The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) is a member company organization that defines standards and operating procedures for the telecommunications industry. Nearly 1,500 experts from 400 telecommunications companies participate in ATIS committees, whose work focus includes network interconnection standards, number portability, improved data transmission, wireless communications, Internet telephony, toll-free access, and order and billing issues. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) frequently refers operations issues to ATIS committees for recommended solutions. Members of ATIS and committee participants include, but are not limited to, telecommunications service providers, manufacturers, software developers, resellers, enhanced service providers, and providers of operations support.
